Energy that works
for New York

As a national leader in energy innovation, New York stands uniquely prepared to address its increasing energy demand, projected to surge 50 to 90% in the coming decades. This dramatic uptick is driving New York to continue its deployment of American energy solutions at scale.

In response to rising demand, Ørsted is leading New York’s offshore wind development with a proven track record. Our groundbreaking South Fork Wind and Sunrise Wind projects represent a combined investment of over $1 billion into critical state infrastructure and communities, bolstering manufacturing, strengthening the U.S. supply chain, and creating thousands of good-paying jobs.

New York’s clean energy growth is delivering reliable, affordable electricity that meets demand statewide – while serving as a strong model of American energy independence.

Energizing New York communities

In March 2024, South Fork Wind made history as the country’s first commercial-scale offshore wind energy project, now powering approximately 70,000 New York homes and businesses.

Our second New York project, Sunrise Wind, is located 30 miles east of Montauk Point. Once completed, this landmark project will become the state’s largest offshore wind farm, producing enough energy to power approximately 600,000 homes. Built under industry-leading project labor agreements, Sunrise Wind has already created hundreds of family-sustaining union jobs and awarded contracts worth hundreds of millions of dollars to local businesses.

To support long-term operations across our offshore and onshore clean energy projects, Ørsted is also establishing a U.S. Operations and Maintenance Hub in Suffolk County. This facility will create 100 full-time positions on Long Island, further placing New York at the forefront of America’s energy frontier.

These critical projects are strengthening electricity reliability and affordability across New York. A recent independent study highlighted that without offshore wind, the state faces significant power deficiencies and found that offshore wind could save New Yorkers as much as $77 million in wholesale electricity costs – in just a single cold weather month. Expanding offshore wind means both the grid reliability to meet growing demand and the cost savings that come from abundant, homegrown power.

Ever since I was a little girl, I was always doing projects with my hands. These days I’m a local 361 ironworker, putting together foundations for the offshore wind turbines that will power schools, hospitals – my whole community."

Sharing marine and coastal environments

Ørsted builds clean energy projects the right way – ensuring successful coexistence with marine wildlife and ecosystems. We plan, construct, and operate our wind farms in compliance with all environmental regulations.

Beyond that, we support mariners and the fishing industry, partner with marine services provider Sea Services North America, and award millions of dollars toward navigation equipment upgrades and professional mariner training. We also work with research institutions and public universities, fund scientific studies, and collaborate with environmental groups to minimize disruptions to wildlife. These scientific partnerships are central to our projects. For example, South Fork Wind, Ørsted worked with INSPIRE Environmental to conduct extensive benthic habitat mapping and fisheries monitoring studies, which established robust protections for marine ecosystems
