Delivering offshore wind to NY

Delivering for New York

New York is an offshore wind leader and national hub for the country’s growing renewable energy industry.

The Empire State believes in the power of offshore wind, and Ørsted is working to make New York’s ambitions a reality. As the state’s leading partner in offshore wind, we've delivered New York’s first project and have begun constructing its largest.

This demonstrates our ongoing investment in the state, and we’re not stopping there. We aim to further strengthen and expand the offshore wind ecosystem that we are spearheading in New York. These projects—and more to come—will create more jobs for skilled union workers and reinforce New York’s local energy supply chain, while ensuring marine conservation.

We’re helping New York continue to deliver a clean energy future.

Delivering for Long Island

Ørsted is proud of its track record in New York, which dates back to 2017 with the Long Island Power Authority’s approval of our history-making offshore wind farm, South Fork Wind. As the state’s leading offshore wind developer, we’re delivering local jobs, economic development, and clean power to New Yorkers.

Long Island is at the heart of New York’s offshore wind industry. In March 2024, South Fork Wind became the country’s first commercial-scale project, bringing renewable energy to ~70,000 Long Island homes and businesses.

Wind farm construction
South Fork Wind is delivering clean power, jobs and economic investment to New Yorkers.
Currently under construction, our Sunrise Wind project will become New York’s largest offshore wind installation thus far, powering ~600,000 homes once operational and delivering even more economic benefits to Long Island. Sunrise Wind is being built under industry-leading project labor agreements that ensure local union participation throughout the construction phase. Like South Fork Wind, this project will continue to create family-sustaining union jobs with Long Island contractors during project construction.

To further shore up our commitment to Long Island, we are opening a new regional U.S. operations and maintenance (O&M) hub in East Setauket in 2024. We are making Suffolk County an epicenter for training and are hiring the East Coast’s growing offshore wind talent.

Creating jobs for New Yorkers

With each new offshore wind project, we aim to scale up the clean energy we deliver, helping New York meet its targets even faster. Sunrise Wind will deliver more than eight times the energy of South Fork Wind, achieving roughly 10% of New York’s offshore wind goal of 9,000 MW of renewable energy by 2035. Our goal is to bring even more locally sourced energy to New Yorkers.

This means that New York’s workforce and supply chain ecosystem must be scaled up accordingly. Diverse skills for a range of jobs will be needed to build these projects. That’s why Ørsted is partnering with New York businesses to build out the offshore wind industry with a focus on local labor and supply chain contracts.

Conserving and restoring marine ecosystems

Ørsted builds clean energy projects the right way to protect marine and coastal ecosystems and coexist with marine wildlife. To do this, we partner with research institutions, fund scientific studies, and work closely with local environmental groups.

We’ve worked with public universities, funding research that assesses the impact of offshore wind on natural ecosystems. Furthermore, we support mariners and the fishing industry, partnering with Sea Services North America and piloting programs like ghost gear removal to protect wildlife.
Ocean biodiversity
We work to shape an industry that can successfully coexist with marine life.
As the world’s most sustainable energy developer, we believe that renewable energy projects are key to a healthier environment when they’re built with a nature-conscious mindset. That’s why our ambition is to have a net-positive biodiversity impact from all renewable projects commissioned from 2030 onward, enhancing biodiversity as a core aspect of Ørsted’s business.

Sharing marine and coastal environments

At Ørsted, coexisting with marine life means doing our utmost to mitigate and minimize disruptions to marine and coastal wildlife. In all our offshore work, we aim to work in a way that limits impacts on coastal and marine ecosystems and wildlife.
