America’s first commercial-scale offshore wind farm is working for New York. Located 35 miles off Long Island, South Fork Wind is providing reliable, cost-effective power to 70,000 homes – while meeting growing regional demand.
Built through partnerships spanning 173 supply chain contracts, South Fork brought new opportunities to legacy American industries, from steel manufacturing and shipbuilding to port operations. The project created over 1,000 jobs and engaged suppliers from Rhode Island to Texas.
Operational since July 2024, South Fork is delivering on its nationwide investment. In its first full year of operation, South Fork achieved a 46.4% net capacity factor. Through operational optimization and strong wind speeds, performance climbed to 53% for the first half of 2025 – comparable to New York’s most efficient natural gas plants. The project has become a cornerstone of grid reliability, performing during extreme weather events when Long Island needs it most.
In this South Fork Wind Report, we showcase how the project:
Is delivering reliable, affordable electricity that matches baseload performance while diversifying New York’s energy mix
Is strengthening grid resilience during critical peak demand periods
Is coexisting harmoniously with marine ecosystems and providing new habitat for commercially valuable species
Advanced American manufacturing capabilities through a robust domestic supply chain
Created career pathways for union workers and skilled tradespeople
