BOSTON, MASS.– March 12, 2025 – Ørsted, a leading global renewable energy company with 11 gigawatts of U.S. energy projects in development, construction, and operation, announced that its U.S. offshore wind energy projects have created more than 1,400 direct jobs for American union workers to date. In achieving this milestone, Ørsted’s U.S. offshore wind projects have generated approximately 3 million union work hours and counting, as the company builds on its partnership with America’s safest and most skilled construction workers.
Today, more than 800 union workers are actively building Ørsted’s U.S offshore wind energy projects, and an additional 500 union workers are expected to start offshore work this year at the Sunrise Wind and Revolution Wind projects. Together with the operating South Fork Wind, these offshore wind energy projects will power approximately 1 million American homes and businesses at a time when unprecedented electricity demand requires a rapid expansion of domestic energy production.
“Offshore wind is a powerful engine for job creation, bringing new workers into America’s booming energy industry while creating fresh opportunities for existing companies and workers,” said Amanda Dasch, Ørsted Region Americas CEO. “We’re proud to be creating American union jobs as we deliver on our commitment to build a robust domestic supply chain. These are highly skilled and hard-working American people who are helping meet our country’s growing need for power while strengthening the reliability of our energy system.”
“Ørsted committed to building its U.S. offshore wind energy projects with American union labor – and they’ve delivered on that promise,” said Sean McGarvey, President of North America’s Building Trades Unions (NABTU). “Through projects like Ørsted’s Revolution Wind and Sunrise Wind, high-quality jobs are being created, along with high-quality training programs that empower American workers to enter and thrive in the middle class. By employing the most skilled and safest workforce in the nation, these projects are being built to the highest standards of excellence.”
Ørsted’s offshore wind energy projects are part of the company’s broader $20 billion investment in America’s energy industry through 2030, with a domestic supply chain that extends to more than 40 states and includes core U.S. industries like shipbuilding, steel fabrication, ports, and the power grid.
Like the operating South Fork Wind project, Revolution Wind and Sunrise Wind will help meet energy demand in the resource-constrained, densely populated Northeast, delivering power under long-term, fixed-price contracts.
Ørsted’s recent U.S. investments include:
- American-Made Ships to Support Offshore Wind Energy Projects – The first U.S.-built offshore wind Service Operation Vessel, the ECO Edison, was constructed by more than 600 workers at Gulf Coast shipyards in Louisiana, Mississippi, and Florida, with components sourced from 34 states.
- Completion of South Fork Wind – The country’s first commercial-scale offshore wind farm is fully operational and powering approximately 70,000 New York homes and businesses.
- Revitalization of Connecticut’s State Pier – Ørsted and its partners have invested $100 million transforming New London’s State Pier into a state-of-the-art industry hub.
- Long Island Operations & Maintenance Hub – A permanent workforce in East Setauket, NY will help manage Ørsted’s growing portfolio of American generating plants, supporting local jobs and economic growth.
- Local Workforce Development – Ørsted has invested more than $14 million in job training programs and support services, including two new offshore wind safety credentialing centers where hundreds of workers have received training.
“Offshore wind energy is delivering good-paying union jobs today, and Long Island is a prime example – with more than 400 of our union workers busy today building the electrical infrastructure for New York’s next offshore wind project, Sunrise Wind,” said
Billy Haugland II, CEO of Haugland Group. “Our skilled workforce is proud to be at the forefront of this new American energy industry, as we work with Ørsted and our partners to expand domestic energy generation, strengthen Long Island’s power grid, and create union jobs.”
“ProvPort played a pivotal role in supporting this industry at the very beginning and we are positioned to support offshore wind projects for the foreseeable future,” said
Chris Waterson, President and CEO of Waterson Terminal Services. “We appreciate Ørsted’s investment and leadership in developing America’s next energy industry.”
“The talented, hardworking men and women at Riggs Distler are proud to be supporting American energy independence by providing the infrastructure for the growth of our offshore wind industry,” said
Stephen M. Zemaitatis Jr., President and CEO of Riggs Distler. “These projects have supported economic growth for local suppliers and created good paying job opportunities. We look forward to continuing to build the physical infrastructure that is enabling a stronger and more resilient energy grid across this country.”
“Ørsted’s and the State of Connecticut’s significant investment in State Pier has not only brought hundreds of new jobs to New London, but it has also resulted in millions of dollars in added value to the local economy,” said
Connecticut Port Authority Executive Director Michael O’Connor. “State Pier has rapidly become one of the country’s premier wind turbine marshaling hubs, and we are poised for continued economic growth in the years ahead.”
“Through our activities for Ørsted, Boskalis has been able to expand our U.S. presence and hire more American workers,” said
Jared Dent, Boskalis Project Director. “Transportation and installation of foundations and offshore substations for Ørsted has enabled us to expand the skills development of the American workforce to support the new offshore wind industry and provide good paying jobs to people and communities across the Northeast. To date, we are approaching 100,000 union hours worked and more than 350 U.S. port calls. As Ørsted looks to continue growing its U.S. footprint, we look forward to additional opportunities to support their work and continued hiring of more local workers.”
