Offshore wind farm growth alongside mariners | Ørsted

Enabling easy navigation around wind farms for mariners.

Building sustainable relationships with fishermen and other marine users is very important to us. We strive to ensure local fishermen are not adversely impacted by the construction of our offshore wind farms and we always inform marine users about our activities in advance. Our Mariners Briefings can be found here.

Fisheries Outreach Philosophy:

We will…

  • Promote the smart growth of the American offshore wind industry
  • Focus on maintaining access and navigation in and around our wind farms for all ocean users
  • Complete scientific research collaboratively with the fishing community
  • Be accessible and available

With Ørsted’s support, the Maritime Institute of Technology & Graduate Studies (MITAGS) has created a virtual offshore wind farm navigation simulator for mariners. The simulator allows mariners to experience piloting through a commercial-scale offshore wind farm. Learn more.

We have already implemented several initiatives derived from fisheries input, including:

  • Layout changes on projects
  • Changes to cable routes & landings
  • Expansion of project envelopes
  • Fair & straight forward gear claim process
  • Mariners Briefings
  • Commercial fishing vessels as safety & research vessels
  • On-board fisheries representatives
  • Verification of layout in simulators
  • Shared operations & maintenance facilities
  • Opportunities to engage Ørsted like our online stakeholder survey, and (virtual) port hours
